Every day, it seems corporate conglomerates
threaten to close down yet another small, sometimes family owned,
business. Support of and survival of small businesses will most
likely be a hot topic in the 2004 Presidential race. Clearly
becoming a rarity in today’s
business world, Miner Electronics, a family owned business for
over fifty years, has stood the test of time and continues to flourish
under the leadership of our owners, Joel Miner and Bill
Dow.

Joel, whose grandfather and father founded
Miner Electronics, graduated from Purdue University Calumet in
1981 with degrees in Sociology and Industrial Supervision. He
began working at Miner Electronics under the tutelage of his
father in 1983 and, in 1987, Joel and his sister, Janet, took
over operation of Miner Electronics. In 2003, Joel succeeded
Janet as President of Miner Electronics after she passed away
from a long and courageous battle with cancer. At the request
of Purdue University Calumet, Joel recently accepted a position
on the Advisory Council for PUC’s School of Electrical
and Computer Engineering Technology.
Bill is originally from Waukegan, Illinois,
and graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Marketing
from Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois. After graduation
in 1983, he began his career with Motorola as its Service Representative
in Central Illinois. He also taught Marketing at Richland Community
College in Decatur in the evenings. In 1989, he came to South
Chicagoland to run Motorola’s
Company owned Service Centers in Alsip and Schiller Park. In 1995,
Motorola sold its Company owned service centers to the MSS Community.
Bill became the managing partner of Miner Electronics, and has
run the day to day operation for the past nine years. He is the
incoming Chairman of the Great Lake MSS Association, which is comprised
of Motorola dealers from New York to Nebraska, and is one of 10
dealers on the Motorola Dealer Forum Advisory Board.
