A Brief History of Miner Electronics
Miner Electronics was founded in Hammond, Indiana, by Harold E.
Miner and his son, Jack in 1948. Harold had been a long time entrepreneur
in Northwest Indiana, and Jack was a Veteran of World War II, and
studied at Purdue University, becoming a Radio Engineer. The original
Miner Electronics focused on televisions, as well as two-way radio
systems. Motorola made both of these items.
Early on, the Military and Police were the
only users of two-way radios. In the early 1950’s, the
Federal Communications Commission allocated frequencies for taxis,
and industry. This was a new business
opportunity for Motorola, and in 1954, Miner Electronics was appointed
an Authorized Service Shop (MSS) for Motorola in Chicagoland and
Northwest Indiana.

By 1960, it was decided that all of the company’s
focus should be on the Public Safety and Business applications
for two-way
radio. The focus was to become the premier
Installer and Maintainer of Motorola’s products anywhere.
Today Miner is one of the finest providers of Motorola products
and services, and represents many of the cutting
edge manufacturers of industrial and public safety electronic equipment
in the world.
In 1980, Miner Electronics moved to its present facility located
in Munster, Indiana. They also have a branch office in Joliet,
Illinois, servicing Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana
Jack Miner retired in 1987, and was succeeded by two of his children.
Janet L. Miner served as President from 1987 until June 2003. Joel
Miner is the current President of Miner Electronics. In 1995, Bill
Dow joined Miner Electronics as Vice President of Operations and
General Manager. Joel and Bill share the ownership of Miner Electronics,
and plan on being at the helm of Miner Electronics for many years
to come.

Today Miner Electronics is one of two organizations with the distinction
of MSS in Chicagoland, and is rated in the top 10 of the largest
